“Forgetting what is behind and straining towards what is ahead…” Easier said than done, right? Even when it comes to what we are eating, forgetting the past may be challenging, but it is an extremely important component of moving forward.
Who can relate to the following scenario? It was a Monday. You started off on the wrong foot by sleeping through your alarm which lead to missing a workout, a rushed morning getting ready, followed by a drive through breakfast at your favorite fast food restaurant. Your eating went downhill from there. Yes, some poor choices were made. But here is the kicker: that was 3 days ago, and you are still dwelling on these choices.
Yep. Been there. Done that.
Forgetting the past is a mental exercise. One poor choice does not have to lead to another. But when our eyes are focused on that choice, it often does. If you are walking down the road and accidentally step in a pile of mud, do you fall down and roll around in it? No! How absurd would that be?
In a similar way, giving ourselves permission to eat anything we want just because we had a couple donuts is almost as silly as physically rolling around in the mud because your shoe is dirty.
Turn your head around! Today is a new day! Yesterday is in the past. If you are about to eat lunch, breakfast is in the past. Take it one meal at a time, one snack at a time, one choice at a time. Forget what is behind and press on towards your goals of good health. Keeping your shoes clean may not always be possible. Mistakes happen. But keeping the rest of your body clean… that is doable.
I don’t know about you, but I will skip the mud bath today. Press on.
