Never Once

Do you have a song that seems to come out of nowhere and speaks directly to your soul? I have several. What makes them so special is they were unexpected and exactly what I needed to hear for encouragement. Some songs are ones I have known for years but heard in the right context or in a certain season of life they convict in a new way. Songs have a way of shattering the stained glass masquerade and cutting straight to the heart.

Last fall we were fresh off the boat from our Florida adventure and searching for a church in our new town. The first Sunday we visited the church where we would later place membership we sang “Never Once” by Matt Redman.

Standing on this mountaintop

Looking just how far we’ve come

Knowing that for every step

You were with us

Kneeling on this battle ground

Seeing just how much You’ve done

Knowing every victory

Was Your power in us

Scars and struggles on the way

But with joy our hearts can say

Yes, our hearts can say

Never once did we ever walk alone

Never once did You leave us on our own

You are faithful, God, You are faithful

Every step we are breathing in Your grace

Evermore we’ll be breathing out Your praise

You are faithful, God, You are faithful

You are faithful, God, You are faithful

This was one of those times that I was almost brought to my knees. Songs do not usually make me cry but without warning tears were streaming down my face so much so that I could not even sing. Reflecting on a battle I had that I continued to heal from, one I was fighting tooth and nail to finish and one that God, no doubt, completely removed me from…I was overwhelmed. While I am not a marathoner like my friend Jess, I emotionally felt that was what I had just experienced. Being completely spent yet filled by God’s presence…I cannot even describe. This song spoke to my soul.

Never once did we ever walk alone. Never once did you leave us on our own. You are faithful, God, you are faithful.

Fast forward to about a month ago to our first visit to Amarillo since moving. As we were turning onto one of the main streets in town this song “randomly” came on the radio. I may not have thought too much about it other than this street took us right by the hospital where Annabelle was in the NICU. Once again, tears were streaming down my face. Once again, I was overwhelmed reflecting on our journey to now having our healthy daughter riding in the back seat. I was reminded in general of the times God came through which really is every single time no matter how a situation turns out.

Never once did we ever walk alone. Never once did you leave us on our own. You are faithful, God, you are faithful.

Life is full of mountaintops, battlegrounds, scars, and struggles. What really gets me is that through it all God is faithful. He does not shun us when we lose the battle because he already won the war. There are absolutely times we are on a high feeling close to God and everything just seems to click. Sometimes circumstances do not turn out as we had hoped, and we are left with scars from our struggles. This song defined what I didn’t even realize I feeling. Some of the greatest joys come from reflecting on the greatest struggles.

Never once did we ever walk alone. Never once did you leave us on our own. You are faithful, God, you are faithful.

What song is it for you? God speaks to us in many ways, one being through music. I challenge you to be open to the songs that you “randomly” sing at church, hear on the radio or pop in your head. God just may be telling you something. He just may be reminding you that you have never walked alone. Never once did he leave you on your own.

You are faithful, God, you are faithful.
